Here’s My Story

Several years ago while working at a local college I felt God's leading to pursue my graduate work in education. In spite of reservations over balancing marriage, motherhood and a full-time job, I began the process. At this time, I experience God’s favor and grace presenting itself in the support of my husband who cared for our three daughters (while I went to class), and a boss who would allowed me to leave early so that I could reach class on time. They were instrumental in helping me get to the finish line.

As I prepared to enter this new phase in my professional life, concerns bout the possibility of a permanent blemish on my record surfaced. I wonder if my career as an educator would be hindered by a lapse in judgement as a youth, caused by being at the wrong place at the wrong time (what was I to do?). In my attempt to fix things, I orchestrated what would be my perfect plan. In it, I would be at the right school (preferably a familiar place like my old elementary school), I would work with the principal of my choice and I would acquire some extra training to ensure a stellar performance. If you noticed, I said "I" (my plan), but little did I know that as I prayed and thanked God for this wonderful opportunity, that he would direct my steps to another school (not the one of my choice) and a principal who was not a people person . There would be no extra training!

Paula White: Unable to Blush
Paula White titled her October 16, 2006 broadcast of her daily television program Paula Today, "Discover God’s abundant life for you." She opened the show with this startling announcement of her upcoming guests: "Two of the greatest minds that have ever been raised up for such a time as this, are here to transform your mind, to take you to where you want to live."

The queen of the Prosperity Gospel went on to recount her version of the Bible story of Joseph and his brothers, noting that Joseph had learned the wisdom of the world and God had prospered everything he touched. From that "Dr." White (she uses that title, though her doctorate is honorary from some unknown, and no doubt unaccredited, institution) concluded that if Christians would only learn the wisdom of this world, they too would prosper in every endeavor as well.

Introducing her guests, she said, "If you want to change the way you live, change your thinking. I want them to bring their wisdom to you today, give people tools to really transform their lives." And then the camera panned over to two men, co-authors of the book, "Why We Want You to be Rich": Robert Kiyosaki and Donald Trump.

Yes – the Donald. Donald Trump -- to give you the wisdom of the world to transform your life! I mean, who wouldn’t want a life like his? On his fourth marriage – all to beautiful (at least by outer appearance) women who mothered his children. The Donald – living in the lap of luxury, flying around in his own private jet, hosting his own reality program, The Apprentice, and here on this "Christian" program to share his worldly wisdom with all of us: how to become rich – how to become a billionaire.

Paula White's website really plugged this series of interviews on its home page with this promo: "Paula welcomes Mr. Donald Trump, Chairman and President of Trump Organization, for an exclusive ground breaking interview. Donald Trump will be joined by Robert Kiyosaki, author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad with over 26 million copies in print. These two titans of business have joined forces to release a brand new best selling book "Why We Want You To Be Rich, Two Men – One Message." (A link to order the book here.) They will discuss this and much more with Paula October 20th, 22nd - 24th and 27th taped on location in New York City. Check your local listings for broadcast times and make plans to watch as Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki join Paula for this unprecedented media event, the first interview Mr. Trump has ever done on Christian TV!"

Trump’s secret to empowerment? Never quit. "A quitter is always a loser." The only catch, though, is you must have a good brain. "God had to have blessed you with a good brain," Trump said, (trying to fit God into his conversation somehow.) Only smart people are in his league. Paula White added her own motivational spin to Trump’s book, "This is a really great book in that you really teach people self-empowerment, to begin to take control…The power of perseverance—what I love in this book is you give the insight of what got you up every day – you chose not to feel sorry for yourself. Your philosophy is if you’re going to think, think big."
Bible Talk?

Kiyosaki, the more spiritual of the two chimed in, "It really is a spirit of winning – the holy spirit, your personal spirit."

"You have to believe in yourself", Paula added, "If you don’t believe in yourself, you will never change the dynamics of your life."

Kiyosaki then turned to Scripture. "From the Bible, it says ‘give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for life.’" (How about chapter and verse, there Bobby!)

"The only limitations are the ones we put on ourselves," Paula bubbled. "If we change our way of thinking, change our way of life – the bible all about empowerment."

She was speaking Trump’s language. He told of athletes who make bad financial deals for a lack of knowledge and end up bankrupt, while making their managers rich. Trump lamented, "If they knew what you preach, Paula, they would never be in the condition they’re in today."

Paula nodded in agreement. "The Bible says where there is not knowledge you perish, you die. Principles change you. Until you start living by principles your life will never change. I want you to be wealthy because Christ paid the price for you to get there."

Then Paula, looking into the camera, made her pitch. "Today’s about empowerment. That is why you need to call and get ‘Why We Want You to Be Rich’ – for your gift of $25.00. It will radically change your life. When you’re in poverty, when you’re struggling, I said, ‘this is not for me. I can have the future I desire.’ There is freedom when you have finances to do what you want to do. Then you can have the life you’ve been dreaming of. I’m seeing you somewhere in the future and you’re looking a whole lot better than you do right now."

On that note, Paula White ended the program, though this was only the first installment. She ended with a quote from false prophet, Kim Clement – "I’m seeing you somewhere in the future and you’re looking a whole lot better than you do right now." Clement rallies entire congregations into that chant after stirring up the crowd with his wild piano playing just about everywhere he goes.

I’m reminded of a real Scripture verse – unlike the ones made up for this program – "’Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? Nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore shall they fall among them that fall: in the time of their visitation they shall be cast down,’ saith the LORD" (Jeremiah 8:12).

How can she carry on like this with a straight face?
